But first some of you might ask, what is clipping actually?

Clipping is a form of audio waveform distortion that occurs when an audio signal exceeds the maximum level that audio equipment can handle. This results in the top of the waveform being truncated or “clipped.” While often viewed negatively due to the potential for harsh distortion, clipping can be harnessed creatively to add warmth, grit, and presence to a sound.

Soft Clipping vs. Hard Clipping

• Soft Clipping: Soft clipping gradually limits the waveform as it approaches the threshold level, gently curving off the peaks rather than abruptly cutting them. This type of clipping adds warmth and fullness to the sound and is less aggressive, maintaining more of the original dynamics of the audio signal. It’s often used to give a track a smoother, analog-like saturation.

• Hard Clipping: In contrast, hard clipping sharply truncates the waveform once it hits a certain threshold, creating a more abrupt and aggressive form of distortion. This can lead to a more pronounced and gritty effect, often desired in genres that benefit from a harsher, more edgy sound like rock or heavy electronic music.

We designed Crispy Clip in a way so there are intuitive controls for experimenting with both soft and hard clipping.

Let’s have a look at the main parameters:

Ceiling Control

The Ceiling parameter sets the clipping threshold, ranging from 0 to -48dB. Adjusting this control helps determine when the clipping effect begins, allowing for subtle to pronounced effects depending on your setting.

Push Control

The Push parameter measures how aggressively the audio signal is driven into the clipping threshold, ranging from 0 to 48dB. Increasing the Push intensifies the clipping effect, enhancing the body and presence of your audio.

Clip Shape Control

Crispy Clip Light’s Clip Shape control is central to transitioning between soft and hard clipping. It offers a continuous adjustment from 0% (soft clipping) to 100% (hard clipping), giving you the flexibility to blend these effects seamlessly.

Understanding and applying different clipping techniques can significantly alter the character and dynamic of your music. By adjusting its Ceiling, Push, and Clip Shape controls, you can craft anything from subtle enhancements to bold, dramatic audio statements.
